Data stored on your device
Scientility stores your notebooks, handwriting, text, formulas, diagrams, imported PDFs, inserted photos and text extracted from them in its local app storage. Courses, events, tasks, sources, an optional profile name and role are stored there too. Appearance settings, symbol favorites and recently used symbols are saved locally. The text read from your handwriting to make it searchable, flashcards made from your pages and bookmarks are stored there as well. The text in handwriting is read with Apple’s Vision framework on your device, and is kept in a file on the device that is not synced or backed up. These data support the functions you use; no account is required.
No tracking or analytics
This version does not automatically send your content, identifiers or usage data to the provider or other companies. It has no advertising, tracking, analytics SDKs, AI services or servers operated by the provider. The optional iCloud sync uses only your own iCloud. Processing inside the app takes place on your device. Apple’s purchase services and system services such as device backups, sharing and Apple diagnostics follow your system settings and the policies of the services involved.
Files and permissions
PDF import uses the system file picker. The app accesses the file you select and saves a copy for your notebook; it does not request general access to your files. A selected file provider may download the file from its cloud service. Photos are chosen with the system photo picker. The app receives only the pictures you select, not access to your library, and stores a downscaled, re-encoded copy without metadata such as the capture location. Text recognition and background removal run solely on your device using Apple’s Vision framework. The app does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, photo-library or system-calendar access. Its calendar is maintained inside Scientility. Apple Pencil input needs no additional permission.
Sharing and device backups
You decide whether to export a notebook as PDF, export a copy of your data, or share a citation. The system share sheet sends the selected content to the destination you choose. That destination may process it outside your device or country under its own terms. Files already exported cannot be withdrawn by Scientility. App data may be included in iCloud or computer backups depending on your device settings. This is separate from the app’s iCloud sync. Manage backups and their deletion through Apple or your computer. The same applies to a backup file of your workspace and to flashcards exported for Anki: they contain your content in a file you save or send where you choose.
Optional iCloud sync
iCloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on in your profile, the app stores notebooks, subjects, semesters, events, tasks, sources, saved templates, your profile name and usage mode, as well as imported PDFs, photos and fill areas, in your Apple Account’s private CloudKit database so they match across your devices. Apple processes this data under its own terms; with Advanced Data Protection for iCloud it is end-to-end encrypted. The provider has no access to it. If you delete your data in Privacy & Data while sync is on, the copy in iCloud and on your other devices is removed too. If you turn sync off, the data remains on the device and in iCloud; you can delete it in your device’s iCloud settings. Flashcards of synced notebooks are synced too.
Storage, protection and deletion
Workspace files, imported PDFs and photos use iOS Data Protection and the app sandbox. Their accessibility depends on the device lock and operating system. Content remains until you delete it or remove the app including its data. Offloading the app keeps its data. Privacy & Data lets you delete the local workspace, profile, imported PDFs, photos, symbol favorites and symbol history. Appearance settings are retained. Export files created by the current version are temporary and removed when their screen closes or the app next starts. Deletion does not remove copies in backups, original source files or files already shared.
Legal basis and your rights
To the extent personal data are processed to provide the app functions, the basis is performance of the agreement under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Under the applicable conditions you have rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection, and a right to complain to a data protection authority. You can view and edit local content in the app, export a machine-readable data copy, and delete local data. The provider cannot remotely access or delete your local documents. Please use the privacy contact below for requests concerning data held by the provider.
Support and external links
Contacting support by email is optional. Your email address and anything you send are then processed to answer your request, on the basis of Article 6(1)(b) GDPR for contract-related requests or Article 6(1)(f) GDPR for the legitimate interest in answering other inquiries. Correspondence is retained only as necessary for that purpose or a legal retention obligation. Please send only information needed for your request. Opening a web or email link uses your chosen browser or mail app and its providers. No message is sent automatically by Scientility.
Purchases and subscriptions
Optional Scientility Pro subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. The app uses StoreKit to request product information and verify signed purchase and subscription status on your device. Apple processes the Apple Account and payment information under its own terms and privacy policy; the provider does not receive your payment details. No purchase history is sent by the app to a provider-operated server. You can restore purchases and manage or cancel subscriptions through Apple. Your own saved templates and blocks remain in local app storage and are included in the privacy data copy and local deletion. PDF export and printing require an active Pro subscription; the machine-readable privacy data copy remains available without a subscription.
